Dr. Song 20% Salicylic Acid Peel - Review

I recently got the opportunity to try (and review!) another wonderful Dr. Song product

I'm relatively new to peels, but I've used several other Dr. Song products in the past and I've always had good experiences with them. They're quickly becoming one of my favorite brands.

I've recently been experiencing severe acne. I spent my whole life with wonderfully clear skin until I approached 30 and started getting massive breakouts. Since I've never had to worry about it before, I've had to scour for information and try tons of products to find something that gives me back my clear skin.

I've tried just about every OTC acne treatment I could find and they didn't really seem to help. This salicylic acid peel seems to be doing far more for me than any other acne treatment. I really love this brand in particular because it looks and feels like professional quality. You KNOW you're using a high quality product.

I have been using this peel every other week for 2 minutes at a time. I wash my face, I apply the peel with a kabuki brush to the oiliest parts of my face first then I apply all over and leave it on for about 2 minutes. I neutralize with baking soda and water, rinse, wait 20-30 minutes, then I moisturize. I haven't noticed any sensations other than a mild tingling and my skin hasn't really peeled, but I have noticed that my skin is improving. I have a more even skin tone, smoother skin, and less breakouts. I haven't noticed any change in an acne scar that I have, but I didn't really expect to see any change anyway.

There are a few things that I cannot stress enough if you're going to try this.

Firstly, it seriously dries your skin out. You have to moisturize religiously if you don't want dry, flaky skin.

Secondly, it would probably be super harsh on sensitive skin. I get a little redness after using it, and some peeling on my nose and forehead area for a day or two, but I think this would be a little much if your skin is sensitive already.

Third and lastly: if you have oily skin and frequent breakouts, this will help, but only if you use it on a regular basis. You have to set some sort of schedule because it treats the problem instead of "fixing" it. If you constantly use it or suddenly stop using it, your skin will make you regret it. You'll get redness and burning from using it too often, or your breakouts will come right back in full force if you suddenly stop using it. I recommend it to maintain your clear skin.

Once my skin is completely clear, I'll probably only use it once a month to maintain it. This peel has worked for me where most everything else has failed. I'll definitely keep using it and I would recommend it to anyone in the same boat as me.

Dr. Song 50% Lactic Acid Gel Peel Review

I've never really tried many peels, not because I was scared to, but because they're so expensive. I refuse to pay to get a peel professionally because its highway robbery, but at the same time I haven't found many products that are budget friendly that I TRUST. I've recently discovered Dr. Song products and I've fallen in love with them. It just made sense to me to try their gel peel because they make high quality products that I can depend on.

I scoured reviews before I tried it. I wanted to see what everyone else had to say and what their results were. I didn't want to make any mistakes! Dr. Song sends the peel instrutions to your email when you order, but I wanted to see how other people reviewed this product and what their experiences were. I found mixed reviews that both impressed and terrified me.

This lactic acid peel comes in a frosted glass bottle with a dropper built into the lid for dispensing. It has the classic shiny silver Dr. Song label. It looks very classy and high quality. The gel is clear and odorless, so there isn't any perfumes or dyes to irritate your skin or senses.

The first time I tried it, I applied it with a cotton ball and left it on for one minute, and then rinsed with water. I had very little stinging or burning, and my skin never peeled at all. The second time, I used a cosmetic pad and left it on for one minute again. I must have done it correctly the second time because it stung pretty bad and my skin started peeling about 4 days later. I also noticed a few changes after my second peel. My skin felt softer and smoother, and even looked a little brighter.

My third time I used a cosmetic pad to apply it, and I left it on for 3 minutes. I could barely stand the burning and stinging so when the 3 minutes were up, I quickly rinsed it off with water. I was really worried that I'd have serious redness or burns but I didn't. My skin peeled a few days later and my complexion looked more even with some slight fading of old acne scars. I've been waiting at least a week between each peel because I want my skin to get used to it. I might eventually switch to 2 or 3 minutes twice a week and see what that does for me.

Overall, I have had some slight redness and some peeling after using it but nothing extreme. I've had the benefits of smoother, brighter skin, a more even skin tone, and some fading of old acne scars. As long as you follow the directions and use common sense, this is a wonderful peel. I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't have super sensitive skin. If you DO have really sensitive skin, you might want to try a peel with a lower percentage of lactic acid (20% lactic acid or lower) until you know how your skin will react.

If you want to give it a try, you can find it on Amazon.

Dr. Song Rosehip Oil Review

I've used several different oils, but I've never used rosehip oil before or anything from Dr. Song. I've never even heard much about rosehip oil before, so this has been a learning experience all around for me.

A bit more about rosehip oil and then I'll continue onward to my review.
I want to make sure to provide some education on rosehip oil because I'm sure a lot of you haven't even heard of it before.

A quick Google search reveals that "rosehip seed oil is full of vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are known to correct dark spots and hydrate dry, itchy skin, all while reducing scars and fine lines."

Digging deeper, I found that rosehip oil is extracted from the seeds of a wild rose bush.
Rose hip seed oil is high in the essential fatty acids linoleic acid (omega-6) and linolenic acid (omega-3). In case you (like me) are curious about everything on the planet,
 rosehip seeds look like this:

Digging even deeper, I found that you can use rosehip oil for a ton of different things like:
  • Pigment reduction
  • Healthy nails
  • To get shiny hair
  • As a hot oil treatment for dry hair
  • Moisturize and nourish dry skin
  • Dandruff
  • Scar reduction
  • Sunburn
  • Anti-aging
  • Improved complexion
  • Dermatitis
  • Acne
  • Eczema

So, now that we've all learned something, back to my review.
I'm pretty impressed with the quality of this rosehip oil because just about everything has SOMETHING added to it. Dr. Song's rosehip oil has no added oils or scents, it's USDA certified and it's organic. It doesn't stink, it doesn't smell unpleasant, and it doesn't have perfumes. If you are sensitive to fragrances in other oils, this is a great product for you.

I love the bottle that this comes in. Maybe I'm a sucker for blue glass bottles, but I think the blue glass coupled with the silver label is simple, pretty, and classy. I suppose the only negative thing I can say about the packaging is that it is so simple that it doesn't really include much information. The label tells you about the rosehip oil in general, but doesn't include any instructions, tips, or helpful uses. You'll have to turn to the internet for that. The bottle has a simple dropper, and pretty much anything that you only use a few drops of has the potential to last for a really long time, so the value is great.

My absolute favorite thing is how many different uses there are and I'm still discovering more uses. I've been using it for my acne scarring and mixing it with my nightly moisturizer.
I usually apply it directly to my scars in the morning. I've noticed that my scars appear lighter after a few weeks and I can only hope it will continue to improve the longer I use it.

At night when I go to bed, I mix a few drops with my moisturizer and apply to my whole face. My skin retains moisture much better and seems to have what I would consider a healthy glow. My fine lines even seem to be fading a little as well. If you're looking to use this as an anti-aging product, don't expect immediate results. From the information I gathered, you should use rosehip oil twice a day and you'll see results after a few months. It takes time for your skin to repair.

Even though this is an oil, it doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy and my skin hasn't been oily outside of my usual T-zone oiliness. This is a real plus for me because anything that has an oil in it usually makes me break out or it makes my skin oily. I haven't had any problems with this at all.

Bottom Line: Dr. Song's rosehip oil is great quality and a good value. A 4oz bottle should last a really long time, the price per ounce is comparable to other brands, and most other brands come in smaller sizes. It is effective for many things without having the negatives that come with other oils. I would recommend it and I will be continuing to use it myself.

If you want to try it for yourself, you can find it on Amazon.
