SheerCover Studio

I really love SheerCover Studio  products! I like that you can look and feel like you just got your makeup done by a professional without all the fuss. I had minimal problems with the products (which is weird because makeup is something you can mess up easily). But if you're not experienced with these types of products, it could take a few times to learn how to get it right or to keep it from looking cakey.

The primer works just as good as pricey name brands I've bought.
The brushes are high quality and make everything apply smoothly.

The Conceal & Brighten Trio is so fun to use once you get the hang of it. It blends easily and covers flaws perfectly. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet that can help you learn to conceal and contour!

The Conceal & Brighten Trio is so fun to use once you get the hang of it. It blends easily and covers flaws perfectly. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet that can help you learn to conceal and contour!

The Sun-Kissed Bronzing Minerals are probably one of the greatest things I've ever used. You can highlight, bronze, "blush", or shine. It can be used in so many different ways to really compliment your face and skin tone. I love that it has 3 shades so you can use them together or separately.

The Perfect Shade Mineral Foundation is just as wonderful. It is light weight, soft, and doesn't feel or look cakey. I also felt like it really matched my skin tone and made my skin look smooth and flawless.

Now comes the fun part. The Lengthening Mascara and Lash Extending Fibers. I am a mascara professional, but I've never used fibers before. It definitely took some getting used to. You layer mascara and then cotton candy-like fibers on your eyelashes. It looks incredible, but if you've never used anything other than mascara or falsies, it can be interesting to learn how. You're probably going to end up with fibers in your eyes and then mascara down the side of your face from trying to rub them out! Don't worry! It comes off! You'll get the hang of it and it is totally worth the effort!

All in all, I recommend trying the SheerCover line. Its great for beginners or if you just want everything in a kit. You won't be disappointed! I'm giving SheerCover a 4/5 because I feel like there should be more product for the price, but it is still worth purchasing!

Unbox & Review - Herbal Essences Naked Collection Volume Kit (Winner!)

Today I am unboxing and reviewing the
Herbal Essences Naked Collection Volume Kit.

The first thing that I will say is that I absolutely LOVE that it comes in its own box together from the manufacturer instead of the products shipping separately in a larger box from Walmart. It it much more secure and you don't have to worry about bottles rolling around, breaking open, and making a mess during shipping.

The kit comes in a white box, it is very plain and nondescript.
Once opened though, it is unique and eye catching with a bright "cover"
that you need to lift to get to the product.

On the back of the cover is product information conveniently placed above each product's location in the box. There is also a small insert included with information on other
Herbal Essences Naked products.

Now, onward to our review!
I'm going to start off with the shampoo and conditioner.
The Naked Volume shampoo and conditioner both smell wonderful. The scent is grapefruit and mint. It sounds like a weird combination, but it turns out to be a good combination. Usually I'm against fruit and/or mint scents because they can be super strong and over powering. This has a soft, lingering scent that is surprisingly pleasant.
The shampoo leaves your hair feeling squeaky clean alone (a feeling I don't like).
BUT, when used with the conditioner, you get super soft hair with some extra bounce.

The dry shampoo works great for me.
I haven't tried it on super dirty hair, so I'm not sure how well it will handle really greasy hair.
I just used it after not washing my hair for 3 days. It absorbs oil well, to the point where you honestly can't tell that hair is unwashed, and it adds a little volume on the roots. It smells EXACTLY like the shampoo and conditioner, so you won't have layered scents. What I love about this is that it does not get gritty like some other dry shampoos I have tried in the past (even if you accidentally use more than you intended), which makes this great for people new to using dry shampoo!

The soufflé is interesting.
It has a very mousse-like foamy feel in your hands but it is silkier. Its pretty easy to apply evenly if you follow directions and use it on wet hair. Again, it smells exactly like the shampoo and conditioner so if you're using them together you'll have one scent all around. It noticeably volumizes, but not excessively. In my experience, if you're looking for a lot of volume, this works so much better if you use it after you use the Naked Volume shampoo and conditioner.
If you use it on dry hair, you'll want to stick to finger application to your roots instead of applying it to your whole head and you can even use it to smooth flyaways a little where you need it.

In closing, here is my honest advice:
If you have fine hair, or limp/flat hair and you need volume,
ALL of these products are perfect for you.

If you have dry/damaged hair, coarse hair, or a tendency to frizz and you want volume, you're much better off using a few products out of this kit at a time. I have damaged hair that is prone to frizz from bleaching/dying, razor cutting, accidently getting my hair caught in a car door on a regular basis, and anything else I can do to kill my hair xD
When I used all the products together, I got volume, but I also got some serious frizz a few hours in. If your hair is anything like mine, I recommend using the Naked Volume shampoo and conditioner with a smoothing serum, or using a smoothing shampoo and conditioner with the soufflé. You won't get as much volume, but you also have a much lower chance of looking like a zombie that just stuck its finger in a light socket.

Annnnnnnd <insert drumroll here>
Congrats to Janet W!

Dr. Scholl's® For Her Cozy Cushions

I am absolutely in love with Dr. Scholl's® For Her Cozy Cushions.

I have this pair of boots.... I call them my "eskimo boots". They are so warm and pretty, but not so comfy.

I received Dr. Scholl's® For Her Cozy Cushions from my Rose Vox Box through Influenster for free, and I'll admit that I was a little skeptical about them at first.

I ripped open the package and the first thing I noticed was how fuzzy they were. They weren't really thick, but they seemed pretty padded and comfortable.

I cut them to size and put them in my favorite winter boots. They make a real difference! I absolutely love them AND I love my boots even more. They're perfect for Ohio's cold and unpredictable winters!

I received Dr. Scholl's® For Her Cozy Cushions for free as part of a Influenster VoxBox. I did not receive any monetary compensation and all opinions in this blog are mine and mine alone.

Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara

Ladies, lets talk about Scandaleyes Retro Glam mascara.

Let me just start off by saying that about 10 or so years ago... and in highschool, I didn't wear mascara. AT ALL. I've always been gifted with really long eye lashes and mascara has always had a tendency to make my eye lashes look long enough that people ask me if they're fake. Once upon a time, only real life strippers and *ahem* adult movie stars had fake eyelashes, so this result was undesirable to me.

Times have changed though and the falsies look is in and totally acceptable for anyone, so I started giving mascara a shot. Cue mascara addiction... I must have 12 tubes of mascara at all times or my head explodes. I have tried every mascara humanly possible.
I've liked a lot, hated a lot, and LOVED very few.

That's where this Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam Mascara comes in. I LOVE it. I adore it. I refuse to live without it! It gives me everything I want from a mascara.

The wand has a unique hour-glass shaped brush that flares your lashes out at the corners, while it extends along the whole lash. It seems to focus on the areas you need to lengthen the most. It really gives you that false eyelash look without having to actually put any on. I haven't had any issues with clumping, but as far as I'm concerned, clumping isn't a real issue and I sometimes want to smack women that complain about it. All mascara has the potential to clump, otherwise it wouldn't be thick enough to do anything other than stain your lashes. This is why we have brow brushes and eyelash combs. Fixes clumps right up. All women should know this, pass it on *wink*.

Give your lashes a little swipe to give them a really nice, incredibly long, and well defined look. Like this:

Or, give it a couple of layers (make sure you let it dry in between coats!) and add a little liner or eyeshadow to your lash lines to make them look full, thick, and dramatic like falsies!
Like this:

Either way, this is by far one of the best mascaras I've come across.Rimmel Scandaleyes Retro Glam mascara hits store shelves this month. Give it a shot and see what you think!

Review- Crime & Passion by Chantel Rhondeau

I recently read a book called "Crime & Passion" by Chantel Rhondeau. Let me fill in a description before I jump in to a review.

A decorated police officer, more intent on justice than following the letter of the law, lands in trouble when a schoolteacher finds a dead body on the beach.
Officer Donovan Andrews knows how to have a good time—ask any woman in town. But when it comes to men abusing their wives or children, Donovan takes it upon himself to make them regret it.

Madeline Scott is unlucky in love. All she wants is a quiet place to heal, away from cheating, womanizing men. However, her life is far from peaceful once she stumbles across the body and witnesses someone fleeing the scene.

Terror spreads in Pleasant View when the small community hears a killer is on the loose. All evidence points to Donovan, and he realizes someone is trying to frame him. When troubling suspicions from his past surface, even fellow officers believe he’s guilty. Madeline might be the only person who can clear his name, but first he has to win her trust.
The body count rises and no one is safe. The murderer makes it clear Madeline is next. Soon, Donovan’s whole world is focused on protecting her and keeping himself out of prison. The more time he spends with her, the harder it is to fight his growing attraction. Since she’s been burned by love, convincing Madeline he’s interested in something more than hot sex may prove harder than keeping her alive.

Now that you know a bit more about it, let me say I loved it and I hated it. Madeline made me want to simultaneously hug her and rip her hair out at the same time. She is definitely the epitome of a strong woman with a whole lot of self-doubt and hormones thrown in. Donovan is the guy you love to hate. He has a low tolerance for bullies, a protective streak a mile wide, and he claims to be a reformed womanizer. He's that guy that everyone says is a jerk, but he doesn't ACT like a jerk. You know the one xD

This was honestly a hard book to read. I thought it was close to being over at least 3 times before finding out there was even more to the story. There were times I couldn't put it down and there were times I wanted to throw my Kindle out the window because it seemed to drag on a bit, but over all it was worth it. The mystery was amazing! The twists and turns will keep you going back for more. No matter how much you keep guessing, you're wrong until the very end. Now, I'm not going to give it away, but the story tells  you just how NOT a jerk Donovan is and just how strong Madeline "don't-call-me-Maddy" can be.

The deep story and even deeper characters makes me interested to see what else Chantel Rhondeau has to offer. You can check out Chantel Rhondeau's other books at http://www.chantelrhondeau.com. Happy reading!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Broadway Nails imPRESS Press-on Manicure

I just tried out Broadway Nails imPRESS Press-on Manicure for Influenster and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. I'm a busy person and I use my hands a lot, but these actually held up a LOT longer than any other press-on nails I've ever tried in my LIFE. They made it for a full week on my nails which is almost a miracle considering I can barely get press-on nails to last an hour. They have some awesome designs, too. I got to try out "Over the Moon".  It wasn't really my kind of color, but it was still cute!

I think the packaging is super cute too, because it looks just like nail polish! And they're so easy to apply! You just clean your nails with the provided moistened pad, peel the tab off the back of the nail, press and hold and VOILA! You have pretty nails!
They have a really cool app at imPressManicure.com that lets you try on all the different patterns and colors. I absolutely LOVE "hottie". Its this purple color-splash that is so me!

I definitely recommend trying them out if you need a temporary manicure. It really takes about 5  minutes and the results are totally worth it.

A bit more about the product:

Torani Holiday Cheer

I know I've totally extolled on the virtues of Torani syrups before, but I am revisiting them for the holidays. I use Torani syrups in most of my coffees. I've even used it to make my own home-made coffee creamer before (I'll tell you how later!). This year, I super-experimented and  used peppermint Torani to make icing for "christmas cupcakes".

Lets start at the beginning, shall we?
I got another opportunity to explore my love for Torani syrups this year.
SheSpeaks sponsored this post by sending me two bottles of syrup, recipes, and coupons.
I received a large bottle of Peppermint syrup, and a large bottle of Salted Caramel syrup (my FAVORITE).
A little background on Torani for those that haven't heard of them before: Torani is family owned, and has been around since 1925. They have over 120 flavors of syrup for use in coffee, cappuccinos, lattes, teas, cocktails, mocktails, lemonades, smoothies, and much more. Torani syrups are expertly crafted and made with the highest quality ingredients, like natural flavors and pure cane sugar. The sugar free varieties have no calories and are sweetened with Splenda. Torani is available online, at Cost plus World Market, Walmart, and most major grocery stores. I have never had any problem finding it around here. Some places carry much smaller bottles than others, though *coughcough-Walmart*.

Onward to my baking fiasco story.

I've decided that I am not making Christmas cookies this year (in the midst of a stress-filled shopping spree), even though everyone will be mad about it. Its too much work, and I'm too busy to make my usual zombie gingerbread men and all the other cookies I take days to make. But I refuse to not have something to make me feel better for the holidays..... cue my Devil's Food Cake craving insanity. I bought 2 boxes just because I was stressed out when I was Christmas shopping and I KNEW I could make holiday cupcakes of some sort.
Until I got them home....and I didn't know what to do with them.

I made the cupcakes according to the recipe on the box. Then I was stumped as to how to make them Christmassy. It seemed like a good idea in the store when I craved cake (of any kind) and had what I call the "Christmas cookie rebellion meltdown".

I scoured the internet searching for ideas without any success. As I was getting a cup of coffee (with Torani syrup, I might add), it hit me. I have a bottle of peppermint Torani (thanks to the ladies at SheSpeaks) that I can come up with something!

All I did was modify my vanilla buttercream frosting recipe for the syrup and sprinkle the tops of the cupcakes with crushed candy canes. They turned out PERFECT for the holidays and everyone loves them! Here is the buttercream recipe that I use (my modification is after the recipe).

Quick Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients

    3 cups confectioners' sugar
    1 cup butter
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream

Directions

In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.

Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.

** I used 3 teaspoons of Torani peppermint syrup, and added more confectioners sugar to fix the consistency, but you can toy around with it however you like to get the flavor and texture you want. An afterthought I had was that you could also top the cupcakes with mint-chocolate curls. Yum!

I'll add pictures of them when I get another minute.

But for those of you wondering about the coffee creamer:

Creamer Substitute Recipe

Ingredients

1 can Eagle Sweetened Condensed Milk
    1 12oz can Evaporated Milk
For flavoring, you can use any extract you have on hand and add until you reach desired flavor.
I use Torani syrup and I love the way it turns out.

Cinnabliss Pancakes
(from Bob R.)

Ingredients

CINNAMON FILLING:

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, just melted (not boiling)
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
    1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon

CREAM CHEESE GLAZE:

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
2-ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
    3/4 cup powdered sugar
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

PANCAKES:

    1 cup all-purpose flour
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup COFFEE-MATE natural bliss vanilla
    1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil

Directions

Prepare the cinnamon filling: In a medium bowl, stir together the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Scoop the filling into a quart-sized heavy zip baggie and set it aside.

Prepare the glaze: In a small pan, heat the butter over low heat until melted. Turn off the heat and whisk in the cream cheese until it is almost smooth. Sift the powdered sugar into the pan, stir and add in vanilla extract. Set the pan aside while you make the pancakes.

Prepare the pancake batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk in the COFFEE-MATE natural bliss vanilla, egg and oil, just until the batter is moistened (a few small lumps are fine).

Cook the pancakes: Heat a large, nonstick skillet over medium-heat and spray with nonstick spray. Use an ice cream scoop (or 1/3 cup measuring cup) to add the batter to the pan. Use the bottom of the scoop or cup to spread the batter into a circle (about 4-inches in diameter). Reduce the heat to medium low. Snip the corner of your baggie of cinnamon filling and squeeze the filling into the open corner. When your pancake begins to form bubbles, add the filling. Starting at the center of the pancake, squeeze the filling on top of the pancake batter in a swirl (just as you see in a regular cinnamon roll). Cook the pancake 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bubbles begin popping on top of the pancake and it's golden brown on the bottom. Slide a thin, wide metal spatula underneath the pancake and gently but quickly flip it over. Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes, until the other side is golden as well. When you flip the pancake onto a plate, you will see that the cinnamon filling has created a crater-swirl of cinnamon. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel, and repeat with the remaining pancake batter and cinnamon filling. Re-warm the glaze briefly, if needed. Serve pancakes topped with a drizzle of glaze.

Are you wondering what to do with your kids this summer?
My kids usually sit around and complain that they have nothing to do all summer and we have a pool! Torani and SheSpeaks

I have been given a great opportunity by SheSpeaks and Torani syrups

If you've never heard of Torani syrups, it doesn't mean that you haven't tried any. Torani syrups are used at coffeehouses and restaurants in over 40 countries, so chances are you've had some in your flavored coffee at some point in time.

Torani is family owned, and has been around since 1925. I had no problem finding it here. Some places carry smaller bottles than others, though.

Shespeaks sent me two bottles of syrup, recipes, and coupons, to try Torani for myself!
I received a large bottle of Sugar Free Vanilla syrup, and a large bottle of Pumpkin Pie syrup.

The Vanilla was absolutely delicious in my coffee, I liked it so much that I ran out and grabbed a few more flavors from my local World Market. The next flavor I tried was Irish Cream. It turned out to be wonderful too! When I cracked open the Sugar Free Salted Caramel, I thought I was in heaven. Salted Caramel is definitely my new favorite. Its rich without being too rich, its sweet without being too sweet.... and it kinda reminds me of Sugar Babies.

I also tried the Pomegranate syrup, and got hooked because its just so delicious in tea! I made pomegranate tea and lemonade. I got the recipes from Torani.com (they have SO many yummy recipes!). I've never had better iced tea or lemonade before. Give them a try!

Pomegranate Iced Tea

Hanes Virtual Comfort Packages

Hanes has a new way to spread smiles and comfort to your friends, family, and fans.

They have a new application on their Facebook page which lets you send nifty FREE virtual care packages  to your friends. You can customize these "comfort packages" with music, photos, personal messages, videos, t-shirt designs, and recipes. Its a wonderful way to brighten someone's day and provide support. For each package sent, Hanes will donate $1 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (up to $25,000) to promote early cancer detection and provide mammograms for those in need. A truly honorable act, if you ask me.

The Pink tab includes a video with interviews of Hanes employees that have been affected by breast cancer. There is also a "Words of Comfort Wall" where fans can leave words of encouragement to those touched by breast cancer.

The Comfort Package is just one of several ways that Hanes contributes to breast cancer awareness. They've made cash and in-kind donations totalling $1 million since 2009 and Hanes is donating up to $125,000 to NBCF this year.

Head on over and send a cute comfort package to someone you care about and help the NBCF all at the same time. I'm sending one to everyone I know. Its a great way to help out with a great cause.

What is age appropriate?

I've recently read several articles about dressing "appropriate".

I've read articles saying that women shouldn't wear skirts showing their knees after 30, I've read articles saying that women are dressing like their teenage daughters, and I've read articles saying that men shouldn't wear baggy jeans past their mid-20's.

Since I'm approaching 30, I decided to explore some 30's advice articles and see what I'm SUPPOSED to wear when I hit the big "3-OH" next year. The articles that I've found were surprising, and a little depressing.

So far, I've discovered that when you're 30 or over, miniskirts are a no-no.
Skirts should go to the knee or below, and if you REALLY want to be "sexy", your skirt should have a slit in the side.If pairing boots with a skirt, your skirt should touch or cover the boots.
Shorts should be no higher than mid-thigh, but the ideal length should be 2 inches above the knee.
Khaki pants are better than jeans for the "30 and above" closet. Low rise is too "young for you" and ripped jeans will make you look homeless. Message t-shirts are also inappropriate.
Women 30 and over should have "classy" things in their wardrobe such as: pencil skirts (note that maxi skirts may be too "trendy" for people over 30), flat-front pants, cashmere sweaters, and ballet flats (women over 30 should not wear heels over 2 inches).
Cleavage is a no-no (because its saggy), and sleeveless is also a no-no (because of saggy arms).Sleeveless CAN be worn if paired with a bolero jacket to cover unsightly arm fat (otherwise known as "bingo wings").
Women over 30 should also avoid "loud accessories" including, but not limited to: glitter, dark nail polish, studded belts, animal print, and anything plastic.

Lets continue on to men 30 and over:
Men should not wear vintage tees past 30.
After 30, men should have crisp tees in good shape (no band tees!) and button up shirts with... KHAKIS, of course.
Polo shirts are also acceptable, tank tops are not.
Jeans should not be baggy or saggy.
I've also noted that after 30 men should not wear off-the-rack suits, they should ditch cargo pants, and avoid clothing with large printed branding.

I'm blown away. Evidently, at 30, I'm supposed to dress somewhere between Mrs. Cleaver and my grandmother.
In one year, my breasts are going to suddenly sag, my arms are going to get flabby, and my legs will become way too unsightly for skirts and shorts. I wasn't aware of this full body degradation. My mother never told me this.
I'm evidently on the road to ugly sweatshirts and polyester pants.

Lets get serious. I don't have flabby arms, my breasts don't sag, my butt is where its supposed to be, and my legs are gorgeous.
I don't see this magically changing in the next year.
Is this society's outlook on 30-somethings?
Is this what people over 30 remember their 30's being like?
Is this how under 30's look at us?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to dress like a cheerleader or a school-girl unless its for Halloween, but is there really a line I cross when I hit 30? I don't think theres a guide to follow when it comes to fashion or comfort. I'm a firm believer in rockin' it while you can.
I think its ok to wear a bikini after 40 if you've got the body for it. I think its alright to shop in the Junior's section at 35, as long as you're not buying that glittery Hello Kitty "princess" t-shirt that was intended for 11 year olds.
Its ok to show some cleavage if your breasts are in good shape.
Its fine to show a little tummy if its still smooth, flat and unmarred.
My mother is almost 50. She wears jeans, shirts, and sneakers.
She doesn't look like she's trying to be 20, she doesn't look like June Cleaver, and she's definitely not trying to be Peggy Bundy.
As far as I'm concerned, until my grandchildren are old enough to be embarrassed by my cleavage or I become embarrassed of it, its not a concern of mine.

I'm well aware that not everyone is lucky with their figure, and that having kids, weight loss/gain, and illness (among other things!) can really make your body go south. That's ok too! You still don't have to dress like a frumpy grandmother if you don't want to.
You can always dress shape appropriate, and within your comfort zone.
For example: Whether you're 17 or 67, you can look great rocking jeans, a nice top, a leather jacket, and heeled boots.

I'm certainly not seeing celebrities dressing much different as they age. Gwyneth Paltrow (39) certainly isn't sacrificing short dresses/skirts because she's over 30. Johnny Depp (48) hasn't given up baggy jeans (or ripped jeans, for that matter).

Should "normal" people aged 30 and over get rid of these things?

I'm not giving up my stilettos, or my mini skirts until I don't look good in them any more.
Well, I might give up my stilettos if I fall and break something no matter how old I happen to be. I'm not going to stop dying my hair whatever color I want until the colors clash with my wrinkles. I'm also not giving up my band tees or my funny t-shirts, and I don't expect my 30-something husband to give them up either.

On the other hand, I'm certainly not going to wear sweatpants that say "Drama Queen" across the rear. I'm also not going to stand in front of my mirror and delude myself into thinking I look great in pigtails and overalls. There are "girl" clothes and there are women clothes.
As for women dressing like their teenage daughters, sometimes it happens....
Sometimes its just the cold, hard fact that kids are growing up faster and acting/dressing older than previous generations.

Is "age appropriate" is just another way of saying "don't wear what you don't look good in"?
Are you going to give up your favorite clothes because they're not "age appropriate"?
What is your opinion on fashion age limits?

Daily Bzz Star wars!

I love what BzzAgent is doing with the new Daily Bzz. I'm tossing in my super-dope post to try for <insert drumroll>

Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Buuuuuh buh buh buh ba buh buh buh buh ba ba buh ba ba ba baaaaaaaah!!!!!

Ok, so the Star Wars theme in buh buh buh sounds way better in your head then it looks when you type it... But I know the theme by heart and I hum it while I do dishes xD

We're huge Star Wars fans here....

AND we're huge Blu-Ray fans. So this is the best campaign in the world for me to get!

My kids have always loved the Star Wars movies (all of them), and they watch the Clone Wars cartoon religiously. They've even gotten neurotic and obsessive about Star Wars. My son wore his Darth Vadar mask into the shower until he was 9. Refused to bathe without it.... My daughter wants to be a princess because of Princess Leia, I've even dressed up as Leia for Halloween... 4 times. We all have our own lightsabers that we built (custom FTW!) and we regularly stage fights with them in our living room (to the star wars theme, of course). Sometimes, my son even lets me wear his Darth Vadar mask and tell him that I am his father.... we all giggle over that. My husband has every movie memorized from beginning to end and can literally recite every movie. Anyway, we are Star Wars nerds through and through.

We're all also Blu-ray nerds (and we have a PS3 in just about every room xD). My son can tell you all the differences between Blu-ray and DVD from quality to disc size. I'm afraid he's going to grow up and be in infomercials. We all know that the quality of a Blu-ray movie is astounding, and we have a huge 62" tv with surround sound to watch ours. We'd love to see the Star Wars saga in HD with all our friends and family, and I'd love the opportunity to bzz about it!

And for the record, I don't call shotgun, I call Chewie =P

Bounce it Off Millions

Have you ever had one of those mind-blowing decisions that you just can't seem to make on your own? Are you trying to decide between white or black socks? Bounce fans can help you! This is your opportunity to Bounce it Off Millions!

If you head over to the Bounce Facebook page, you can click on the Bounce if Off Millions tab and submit your question! Your questions will be turned into a poll and other Bounce fans will vote on it to help you make your choice. Its really great because you can use the poll to help you decide. Or as an excuse.... Like my question. "Should my husband have blue hair?"

My husband: "But honey, I don't think my hair should be neon blue!"

Me: "PSH! In a poll, 71% agreed with this decision. Now you HAVE to have blue hair!"

I'm still fighting him over the blue hair. He doesn't understand that the decision has already been made and I WILL win.

Not only that, to celebrate Bounce it Off Millions, four lucky users will be chose to win a grand prize: A chance to turn their big question into a Facebook-wide advertisement! If you win, over 150 million Facebook users can help you decide between your two options.

But that's not all!

Dreamlights!

BzzAgent is doing some really awesome things with this new "Daily Bzz". I love having the opportunity to get into a program that I normally wouldn't. I especially love Dreamlights. This is my "dope" post telling why I'm excited to join this campaign.

I have been completely infatuated with fireflies since I was 6. I would catch them when I was camping and put them in a jar. I always kept that jar by my sleeping bag. Those fireflies were my night light until I started getting sleepy and I set them free. I did the same thing every single night. Never even got tired of it. I miss those childhood days. I miss seeing the thousands of fireflies gathered on wild blackberry bushes lighting up the night by the lake. I've tried recreating them at home with firefly magnets, firefly lights, and firefly candles, but its never been the same to me as camping all summer with my fireflies.

Sadly, I live in an area where there aren't many fireflies, so I can't introduce my children to the wonder of a firefly nightlight or the beauty of gathering fireflies outside of the pictures from my camping trips. I can't watch them light up the bushes and trees like they did when I was a child. We see a stray firefly now and again, and my kids are enthralled, but its nothing like the magic and the wonder that I experienced during my childhood. I would love to bring this to my children, even if it is simulated. My daughter has the same exact wonder and joy that I was filled with as a child. I would love to see her eyes light up at this. I'm sure she's invent a story about the fairies that live inside the jar since fairies are her world.

I love how the Dreamlights look very authentic. Its almost exactly what fireflies look like inside of a frosted glass jar. I love imagining the stories my daughter would make up. I love giving my daughter the power to believe in fairies and fairy tales. I love the warm feeling I could get just from gazing at it and recollecting those carefree kid days where I had nothing more important to do than catch bugs. These are all the reasons why I'm excited to join this campaign.

As the days get longer, and the nights get warmer, people are venturing outside their doors and enjoying the moonlight. As they walk down streets and paths, the flickering lights of fireflies are hard to miss. During some summers, trees would light up with more fireflies than there were stars in the heavens, turning the whole sky upside-down. As kids, many of us ran through our parents' back yards, collecting fireflies in jars. They'd flicker inside, blinking out their little buggy code to each other. We would wonder what their bio luminescent blinking lights were actually saying. No - nothing that heady. In fact, their gentle flickering communicates their ability to mate and their location - the entomological equivalent of "Hey baby! Over here, good-lookin'! So where bugs fail us, robots fill in. These robots come in the form of tiny LEDs inside a frosted glass lantern. You can set them to glow as long as they have power, or only when you shake the lantern. Don't worry about harming the little fellas - they aren't real. Your karma is safe. So traipse across your moonlit garden again, like you did when you were a kid. Set it on your night stand to offer a soft soothing glow while you sleep, or just take a walk using the lantern as cool illumination as you go. The fireflies won't mind - in fact, they'll probably come to check out the hot little robotic numbers inside.

Are your children scary?

My children are scary. My daughter is 8 (almost 9) and she acts like a teenage girl. My son is 11 and he acts like a teenage girl....
In the past, I've always tried to be rational and responsible when dealing with my children's outbursts.

For example:
"But, Mom! Everyone else is wearing make-up in 2nd grade! Why can't I??!!"
Because this is not "tramp training camp".
I don't say that, but I'm thinking it. Instead I take a deep breath and say "What other parents let their kids do is their business. You're my business, honey. Girls that are wearing make-up at 8 years old are trying to look and act older than they are. You're 8, Morgan. Try to be 8! You'll be older soon enough and you'll have the whole rest of your life to wear make-up."

"I hate you! You're the worst mom EVER!"
What I really want is to stick my tongue out and say "I hate you too, stupid head!".
Instead, I calmly say "You can hate me if you want, and I'm sorry that you feel that way, but I love you."

With my other child it's not much different:
"I don't want to put my laundry away! This isn't fair! You make me do everything!"
[inner voice] You do nothing. You don't even pick up after yourself. You play video games, leave butt-prints in my couch, and make my life miserable every chance you get....
"Son, I'll gladly put your laundry away if you'd like to go to work for me, wash and fold the towels, sweep and mop, load the dishwasher, take the dog for a walk, dust, and cook supper. No? That's what I have to do today, so I don't think its much to ask for you to put your own clothes away after I kindly washed and folded them for you."

My children are the ones that make other people decide against reproducing. My kids make me understand why some animals eat their young. I'm torn between telling them the bald-faced truth, and being a mature, caring adult. Occasionally, I can diffuse a situation with humor, but more often than not they make my head explode. I've been known to use sarcasm.... heavily. I've been known to yell back. But, I always try to be mature when my kids act like spoiled brats. The fact that they act like spoiled brats kind of shocks me to begin with. They don't get everything that they want. I've tried to instill values in them. I've taught them right from wrong. AND I've always been a super-cool punk-rock mom!

How would they feel if I threw a fit because I couldn't have what I wanted. What if I refused to do anything? What if I hated them and slammed doors? What if I went out in public in a ripped and stained red shirt with yellow plaid shorts without brushing my hair or teeth?

Last week, I had enough of the door slams. When my son slammed the door, I proceeded to tell him he was doing it wrong. I then demonstrated the proper way to slam a door and made him do it the "right way" for nearly a half hour. I won and there hasn't been a door slammed since. Yesterday, my daughter started screaming and flipping out because she couldn't find her favorite shirt. I yelled gibberish and flailed my arms around. When she finally stopped her tirade and looked at me in shock, I calmly said "Now you know how ridiculous you look screaming like that."

Obviously I have to be just as obnoxious as they are to get my point across. I guess when I say what that sarcastic little voice inside my head WANTS to say, they get the point much better than when I try to be calm and understanding. To think that these are just the 'tween years. As teens, I'm probably going to have to resort to psychological warfare. I'm going to have to shave eyebrows and draw mustaches while they sleep. I'm going to have to drive them to school in pajamas with feet. I'm going to have to saran-wrap the toilet. I can't wait.

Do you have the same problems? How do you deal with your 'tweens?

The internet

I truly feel like the internet is a wonderful place. Its a constant learning experience. I've been everywhere on the internet. Company/Brand websites, social networking, forums, download sites, upload sites, blogs, the list just goes on. You name it and I've been there. From the faces of Facebook, to the depths of FatWallet, even to the farthest reaches of GaiaOnline. I love the internet. I love to hate the internet.
There are ups, there are downs.... all in all its like a neurotic high school "I love you, I hate you" roller-coaster relationship for me.

There are things I've learned from the internet that I would like to share. Those of you that know the internet as I do may shake their heads. You may laugh. Those who don't should take (most) of these words to heart. You may agree or disagree, but this is my internet experience over the years.

1. Google knows everything. EVERYTHING. If you need to know something, ask Google. (Warning: if Google does not know, this may be the end of the world as we know it, government censorship, or some other conspiracy!)

2. Everyone on the internet is completely prepared for (and even anticipating) a Zombie Apocalypse. They even sell "self defense" tables that break down into a club and shield to defend yourself if you are surprised by an attack. In case of a Zombie Apocalypse, proceed to the nearest PC for survival advice and always remember to remove the head.

3. The internet is a little like school. Except that you don't have to be in the same grade, school, state, age group, race, sex, or country to have someone threaten to come to your house to beat you up because you disagreed with them. 12 year olds, 30 year olds, even 72 year olds are magically transformed into 6'5"- 300 pound professional street fighters by the internet. I've seen people get seriously mad and carry on in real life over an internet fight with a total stranger. Sometimes fighting on the internet is like trying to grab the last pink Zhu Zhu off the shelf when you're surrounded by other moms packed in an aisle in Toys-R-Us at the Black Friday sales. Someone is going to win, there's just going to be a lot of hair pulling and yelling first.

4. The internet has the best T-shirts, and the best demotivational posters.

5. People of all ages go to the internet to unlearn most (if not all) proper english and punctuation. Dropped vowels, intentional misspellings (and not-so-intentional), CAPSLOCK screaming, run on sentences and abbreviations are the language of the internet. Learning "chatspeak" and "leet" is like visiting a foreign country and trying to learn the language by repeating what you hear. If Google didn't know everything, there would be a serious financial gain to "internet speak" lessons.

6. There are tons of witty comments and comebacks everywhere on the web. You find witty responses in some unexpected places. Some are great, some are not so good. My research suggests that "your mom" is still one of the most popular comebacks of choice.
Ironically, even moms are using it.

7. There are many links on the internet. Some of them go to relevant sites, some of them take you to horrible, sick, scary places that are best not spoken of even in the worst of all nightmares. It is always best to check where a link goes before you click on it. You wouldn't want a virus, or some random man/lady parts popping up. Trust me. It happens. A LOT.

8. Animals are incredible. People's pets are making Facebook accounts and playing Mafia Wars. Cats have their own websites and YouTube channels. Birds have their own online comic. All my dog does is lay around. My fish kinda just float in their tank. I've realized I must have raised my pets to be lazy and unproductive. I'm a terrible pet-parent.

9. Not everyone is as technologically advanced as others. Occasionally, explaining to the "technologically disabled" how to do something as simple as clearing your cache turns into a 3 hour conversation that leaves you beating your head off your desk. Instead of explaining, you should refer them to Google as Google knows everything.

10. Social networking is AMAZING! I have friends that update and post pictures when they go just about anywhere. To New York. To the hospital. To the bathroom. To the pool. To the zoo. To get sloppy drunk. Its great to be able to keep up with everyone and hear all about every aspect of their lives. I also learned that social networking sites probably have privacy settings for REALLY good reasons.

11. Online gaming and MMORPGS are huge. If you're not on Farmville, and you're not playing WoW, you don't understand the sheer importance of PC gaming. You probably don't know how very incredibly rare that neon red pig with the pink, blue, and orange spotted stripes is. You have no idea how important someone's level 200 Arcane Mage is. You have no idea how significant it is that they can teleport to Tol Barad, warp the flow of time, and transform an enemy into an animal. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. These people are very passionate about their gaming, which is great on the internet. Beware the person that randomly launches into a 3 hour conversation about their farm in person. Note: When someone starts talking about their new pole dancing job, you may want to ask to which game they are referring to. You don't want to launch into a lecture about strippers when your sister is talking about Second Life.

12. Funnier things happen on the internet than in your life. Things you never thought could happen to anyone in a million years is on YouTube. For the record though, its not polite to laugh at the poor boy up the street that rode his bike into a parked car. Its not nice to laugh at the crazy cat lady that has 38 cats crammed in the back of her tiny Geo Metro in the parking spot next to yours (complete with litter box). Unless you see it on YouTube. Then it is appropriate to not only laugh, but to also share it with all your Facebook friends.

These are the things I have learned from the internet. I'm sure there's more I've learned. Just as I'm sure I'll learn a whole lot more in my life time. These are just the important bits that stand out the most. Perhaps this is just my tired rambling as I'm typing this out on my laptop at 4am. Maybe I'm more perceptive than my mother ever hoped I could be. Whatever the case may be, the internet has surely educated me in many ways.

Has the internet taught you anything today?

Healthy Food Fight!

I'm sure we all know cooking and eating healthy can be kinda tough.
Through SheSpeaks.com I heard about the Aetna Healthy Food Fight
Aetna is providing healthy tips from a nutritionist, cooking and eating tips from Bobby Flay, among many other things. They have tons of recipes from Bobby Flay, The Culinary Institute of America, and everyday people.

Visit the Aetna Healthy Food Fight and explore all the wonderful recipes and other helpful features of their site.
I particularly love the "Healthy Recipe Analyzer". You can enter your recipe/ingredients and it'll rate how healthy your recipe is! You'd be surprised at how many recipes aren't as healthy as you think they are.

Another great feature is Aetna's "Fast Food Alternatives". Unless you're like me and you get sick just thinking about calories and fat, you probably grab fast food now and then. I personally have a hard time cramming down any "fast food" beyond Subway, but my husband has no issue eating a Double Whopper with cheese *shudders*.
If you're on the run a lot and you have to grab fast food, this tool is for you! Not only do they recommend a healthier alternative to some of your choices (such as getting vegetable pizza instead of deep dish), they also include the calorie count AND tell you how long you'd have to walk to burn off those calories!

You can also submit your own healthy entree recipe to compete against others.
Three top qualifiers from each region will travel to the Semi-Final recipe cook-offs.
The Semi-finalists will cook their dishes in front of a representative from The Culinary Institute of America and local VIP judges. The winner from each region will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to compete in the Final Cook-off judged by Bobby Flay. Four Finalists will be competing before Bobby Flay and other VIP judges. The winner of the Final Cook-off will receive a grand prize of $10,000 worth of groceries donated by Recipe.com!

So, if you have a great healthy recipe, join the fight and submit it! If you don't have a healthy recipe, check out the Healthy Food Fight recipes and try something new.
While you're there, you can also enter for a chance to win a set of Circulon gourmet cookware!

I'm hoping some of the tips and recipes Aetna has provided will help my family be a little healthier. They're all junk food addicts and its hard to get them to eat anything that could possibly be good for them. If your kids are the same, give this healthy alternative to Fruit roll-ups a try! No dehydrator needed. My kids love fruit leather!

Apple Spice Fruit Leather
Yields one 11”x17” pan of fruit leather
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 5-8 hours at 170°F

INGREDIENTS
1 25-ounce jar of applesauce
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves

INSTRUCTIONS

    Preheat oven to 170°F.
Line an 11”x17” jelly-roll pan or lipped cookie sheet with greased parchment paper (wax paper will smoke in the oven) or a silicone baking mat.
Spread the puree until it’s about 1/4” thick. Pick up the pan and tilt back and forth until it’s evenly distributed.
Bake in the oven for 5-8 hours. Rotate the pan halfway during the baking time to ensure even drying. Timing will vary depending on the fruit used. It’s ready when it’s smooth and non-tacky.
Let it cool, then cut in strips with scissors or a pizza cutter. Stack or roll them and store in an airtight container or a zipper storage bag. I roll them with plastic wrap or parchment paper so they "peel" like real Fruit Roll-ups.

Tip: Store in a cool, dry place. You can store fruit leather for up to a year in the freezer, six months in the refrigerator or a few weeks at room temperature.

Other ideas/alternatives:
  • Spread a thin layer of melted caramel over the fruit leather and allow it to harden a little before rolling.
  • Cut fun shapes with cookie cutters, stack on parchment paper and tie with a ribbon to make a unique hostess gift or a lunch box surprise.
  • Spice up a can of pumpkin with nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cloves for another twist on fall-inspired fruit leather.
  • Puree a can of peaches or other canned fruit in the blender for a quick option that requires no washing and slicing.
  • To sweeten fruit leather, add a couple teaspoons, or to taste, of vanilla, sugar, brown sugar, honey or maple syrup.
  • You can adjust this recipe for just about ANY kind of fruit! All you need is fruit puree (seasonings can make a difference!), sweetener, and a little tweaking of the recipe cook time (some fruits cook faster than others). Feel free to experiment and share! My favorite is plain strawberry (pureed fresh strawberries, sweetened to taste). Mixed berries are great as well.
